Child starts work
Child starts part-time employment
Part-time employment does not make a child financially independent. Do not take the child's earnings into account when assessing the rate of Clothing Allowance for Orphans or Unsupported children payments.
For more information on children's income see:
Exception
There may be situations where a child starts (or is in) part-time employment and can no longer be considered a dependent child for some other reason such as:
- no longer maintained as a member of the family or
- the caregiver is no longer primarily responsible for them
Child starts full time employment
A child in full-time employment and financially independent is not treated as a dependent child for Orphans Benefit or Unsupported Childs Benefit and Clothing Allowance for Orphans and Unsupported Children.
Note a child is still considered a dependent child if they are working full-time during the school holidays and they will be returning to school after the holidays.
