Previous parental income abatement calculations
Below are the Student Allowances previous parental income abatement calculations.
Living at home rate
Living away from home rate
From 1 April 2022, there are 2 separate abatement calculations depending on the amount the parental income (gross) exceeds the parental income threshold. The 2 abatement calculations used are for students 'Living at home' and 'Living away from home'.
These abatement calculations change each year as part of the annual general adjustment (AGA).
From 1 January 2005
From 1 January 2005, the tables were replaced with a calculation. Originally, the calculation was a 25 cent deduction from the gross Student Allowance for every $1.00 of parental income over the threshold until the income reached the cut-out point.
As this is a calculation of a gross income to determine a net rate, when the lower income tax thresholds changed, the percentage amount changed accordingly.
The percentages that have been used are:
Date | Percentage used in calculation |
From 1 October 2008 to 31 March 2011 | 28.57143 |
From 19 January 2007 to 30 September 2008 | 29.41176 |
From 1 January 2005 to 18 January 2007 | 25 |
From 1 January 1999 to 31 December 2004
From 1 January 1999 to 31 December 2004 there was no standard Student Allowance abatement calculation. Instead, the appropriate rate of payment when a parental income test was applied was specified in the Student Allowances Regulations 1998. See:
