Accommodation Supplement: Contents

Accommodation costs for two premises due to moving

When moving, a client will sometimes need to take up the costs of the new accommodation before they can stop paying for their current accommodation. This will generally be when the tenant enters into a new rental agreement or a boarding arrangement.

During the period the tenant needs to pay accommodation costs for 2 tenancies they will generally not be eligible for the costs of the place they do not occupy as a home.

Clients will need to notify MSD when the accommodation they are occupying as a home changes.

Note an applicable person who is living in a property owned or managed by a social housing provider cannot get Accommodation Supplement.

Example

Astrid has signed the tenancy agreement for a slightly more expensive apartment closer to work and takes possession in a week. She immediately gives the required 28-day notice to her current landlord and as a result, will have to pay rent on 2 tenancies for 3 weeks. Astrid moves into the new apartment a week after she takes possession and is still required to pay rent on her old place until the notice period ends.

Over this period, Astrid can keep getting Accommodation Supplement for the accommodation costs of her old place for the 2 weeks she continues living there. Once she moves to the new accommodation, she can start getting Accommodation Supplement for her new higher costs, but not for her old place as she no longer lives there.

Astrid cannot get Accommodation Supplement for both accommodation costs at the same time.

Payments for the former home when staying in emergency housing or transitional housing due to violence

In certain circumstances a client may continue getting Accommodation Supplement for their former home (except when a partner remains at the home) if they are staying in emergency housing or transitional housing due to violence.
