Child should be included
We are required to pay a certain rate of payment to clients depending on the number of dependent children in their care. If a child is considered to be dependent, that child should be included in the caregiver's benefit.
In cases where the client has genuine concerns about including the child in their benefit (such as concerns about violence from the other parent) advise the client that all information contained in their benefit record is confidential.
If you have any concerns regarding the welfare of the child, the case should be referred to Oranga Tamariki.
A dependent child is a child who is financially dependent. Where the client states that they do not want a child included in their benefit because the other parent is providing financial support, you must:
- decide whether or not the client is providing financial support and
- for Non-beneficiaries advise the client that any income received from the other parent (in all situations) will be charged against their benefit
