Essential repairs and maintenance
Homeowners can claim the cost of essential repairs and maintenance to the house they occupy as accommodation costs. There are some general guidelines to consider when deciding if something is an accommodation cost:
- repairs or maintenance must be essential to maintain the house and property to a habitable standard
- any repairs and maintenance should be made to meet the homeowner and families current housing needs
- all costs claimed must be verified with receipts which, if necessary, are detailed enough to verify the work undertaken was essential or needed for maintenance
Note essential repairs and maintenance can be included as an accommodation cost when recoverable assistance has also been paid for the cost. This does not apply when non-recoverable assistance has been paid e.g. a Special Needs Grant for effluent treatment system maintenance or repair.
