Situations where a student is eligible to get an Accommodation Supplement

Students can get an Accommodation Supplement when:

  • they are getting a benefit and not a Student Allowance, for example they are getting Jobseeker Support Student Hardship during the vacation period
  • they have been declined a Student Allowance for a reason other than their income or their partner's/combined income, or their parents income (if aged under 24)
  • they have used their maximum weeks of Student Allowance entitlement
  • they are a part-time student and not eligible to get Student Allowance

Situations where a student is not eligible to get Accommodation Supplement

A student is not eligible for an Accommodation Supplement if:

  • the student would be eligible to get a Student Allowance, were the student to apply or
  • the student has been declined a Student Allowance because of:
    • the student's income
    • their partner's or combined income
    • their parents' income (if aged under 24 years)

Note students cannot opt out of Student Allowance support and apply for an Accommodation Supplement.

A student may not need to apply for Student Allowance to assess Accommodation Supplement entitlement, where we can determine, based on the information we have that they will not be eligible or entitled for a Student Allowance.

Accommodation location

Accommodation Supplement is assessed on the costs of the place where the client is actually living at the time of application.

If a student moves home during the vacation period and decides to keep their accommodation in their place of study, these costs cannot be included in the assessment of Accommodation Supplement.

In some situations, the partner of a student can get an Accommodation Supplement.
