Assessing a client's debt balance
Unless exceptional circumstances exist, an advance would not be paid where Work and Income debt equals or exceeds the advance limits. Consideration must be given to the client's circumstances and the impact of yet another loan on the net benefit before allowing the client to go further into debt.
For example:
Advance limit | $1300.00
Less Advance debt balance | $800.00
Advance balance | $500.00
Less other departmental debts | $700.00
Total debts less Advance balance | -$200.00 |
Though the client has a $500 Advance balance of their 6-week advance limit left, total Work and Income debts are greater than the client's total 6-week Advance limit.
Note the clients Advance debt balance and advance balance available, are shown on the SADVI screen in SWIFTT.
You will need to check the SOFSI screen in SWIFTT to check the client's current debt level. The SOFSI screen will contain all the client's current debt balances with the exception of Liable Parent Contribution and Major Repairs Advance which you will need to check on the TRACE system.
