Family tax credit stops
When the client no longer qualifies for family tax credit, Away From Home Allowance must stop.
Generally, you should cancel Away from Home Allowance from the first available date except when the client advises of the change more than 14 days after the event.
Exception
There will be instances where clients have received family tax credit and Away From Home Allowance, only to learn when they file their tax return that they were not entitled to the family tax credit they received.
In this case, the client has been overpaid Away From Home Allowance. Do not count the money paid as an overpayment except in cases where client has:
- clearly given false or misleading information or
- where they have failed to give notification of a change in circumstances
