Child Disability Allowance : Contents

Temporarily out of care

The Health Funding Authority provides for alternative care for disabled children by another person or hospital/institution. Child Disability Allowance can continue to be paid to the principal caregiver when the child is in alternative care. This includes a principal temporary caregiver of a child for whom Orphans Benefit or Unsupported Childs Benefit is paid.

If the child goes into the care of another person temporarily and the client no longer meets the definition of principal caregiver (or principal temporary caregiver), Child Disability Allowance can be paid to the person who has the care of the child for the time being.

For more information see:

Legislation

The principal caregiver is the person who has the permanent primary responsibility for the day-to-day care of the child, other than on a temporary basis. It does not include proprietors or employees of any childcare home or institution.

For Orphans Benefit or Unsupported Childs Benefit, the principal temporary caregiver is the person who has the primary responsibility for the day-to-day care of the child for a short-term, unknown, or uncertain period, and is not the natural or adoptive parent of the child.
