Commencement date
Disability Allowance is generally granted from:
- the date of application or
- the date the qualifying cost arose
whichever is the later.
Disability Allowance and main benefits
If the client is applying for a Disability Allowance at the same time as they apply for one of the following benefits:
- Sole Parent Support
- Supported Living Payment
- Jobseeker Support - health condition, injury or disability
then Disability Allowance is granted from the date that benefit commences.
If a non-beneficiary receiving Disability Allowance is later granted a benefit, the allowance is then paid in conjunction with the main benefit.
Disability Allowance for counselling costs
In order to ensure the client receives the correct amount of assistance you will need to include the cost from the beginning of the pay period during which the first session is due, as the expiry date must be the beginning of the next pay period following the last counselling session.
Disability Allowance declined
If a client is declined a Disability Allowance because their disability is not expected to continue for 6 months or more and they:
- later provide information that the disability has lasted, or will last, 6 months or more and
- would have met the other qualifications for Disability Allowance during that time
then Disability Allowance is granted from the date of the original application.
