Medium or long-term accommodation expected to lead to or be sustainable housing

Client's housing needs are resolved if they move into medium or long-term accommodation that is expected to lead to or be sustainable housing.

Medium or long-term accommodation that is expected to lead to or be sustainable housing includes:

  • a transitional housing place funded by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development
  • contracted emergency housing funded by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development
  • social housing
  • private rental
  • boarding arrangement

Client does not move into medium or long-term accommodation - same event

A clients emergency housing need is resolved if they move into medium or long-term accommodation that's expected to lead to or be sustainable housing.

An emergency housing event will be the same emergency housing event when the client:

  • has already received at least 7 nights of an Emergency Housing Grant and
  • has not moved to medium or long-term accommodation that is expected to be or lead to sustainable housing and
  • applies for a further Emergency Housing Grant within 52 weeks

Example 1

A client gets emergency housing assistance for more than 7 nights. They had to move out of their emergency accommodation to stay with a friend for a week because there were no available emergency housing accommodation options.

They then apply for further emergency housing assistance as they do not have access to other accommodation and can longer stay with their friend.

This is still the same emergency housing event. The client did not move into medium or long-term accommodation and still requires assistance.

Example 2

A client gets emergency housing assistance for more than 7 nights. They move out of the emergency accommodation to work on an orchard for 3 months.

The orchard supplies temporary accommodation for its seasonal workers, including the client. After the work is completed, the client applies again for an Emergency Housing Grant.

This is still the same emergency housing event.

The client did not move into medium or long-term accommodation that was expected to be or lead to sustainable housing and still requires assistance.

Example 3

A client gets emergency housing assistance for more than 7 nights. The motelier asks them to leave before the end of their grant because they damaged the motel room.

The client needs a further Emergency Housing Grant to cover their stay in another motel. However, the subsequent Emergency Housing Grant will cover some of the same period of nights as the previous grant.

This is still the same emergency housing event. The client did not move into medium or long-term accommodation and still requires assistance.

Example 4

Rose and their partner, Erin, get an Emergency Housing Grant for more than 7 nights. Rose has been applying for the couples Emergency Housing Grants.

While in emergency housing, the Rose and Erin’s relationship deteriorates and they separate.

Both Rose and Erin apply for a subsequent Emergency Housing Grant each as single individuals. Neither person has moved from emergency housing into medium or long-term accommodation and each still requires assistance.

The new application for Rose is for the same emergency housing event. This means Rose’s emergency housing responsibilities continue to apply.
