Funeral costs
Funeral costs are any costs that arise directly from a funeral and would usually be paid for from the deceased person's estate. Funeral costs will vary depending on the kind of funeral that is held.
Although funerals may share similar traits, each funeral is unique and will depend on a range of factors such as:
- tangihanga practices in accordance with tikanga or
- cultural, religious or spiritual practices or
- modern and personalised funeral services
Reasonable funeral expenses
Only reasonable funeral expenses can be included in the Funeral Grant assessment.
If it is confirmed that a cost is directly related to a funeral, MSD must then determine if it is a reasonable funeral expense.
