Able to obtain and retain accommodation

To qualify for an Accommodation Security Cover Grant, MSD must consider whether the client is likely to be able to obtain and retain the accommodation the Accommodation Security Cover Grant is for.

MSD needs to discuss with the client whether they can likely afford (with any financial assistance, income and other resources available to them) to get and keep the accommodation, including the ongoing costs of the accommodation.

A client may be considered as being likely to get and keep the accommodation when:

  • the proposed accommodation cost is generally under 60 per cent of their net income (and their partner’s, if any) taking into account the client’s individual circumstances, and
  • MSD has discussed the client's budget, or have other evidence showing they can manage their future outgoings
