Period of Accommodation Security Cover Grant

A conditional grant can only be made when a client is entering into an accommodation agreement.

Accommodation Security Cover Grant is active for 12 months from the beginning of the accommodation agreement. A claim for costs can be made if the accommodation period ends within 12 months.

If a client is still in the accommodation at the end of the 12-month period, then the Accommodation Security Cover Grant will end (lapse) and claims for costs can no longer be made.

Subsequent Accommodation Security Cover Grant

In some cases, a client may stay in accommodation longer than the 12-month grant period. If the accommodation supplier will only continue the accommodation agreement if the client has an Accommodation Security Cover Grant, another conditional grant can be made.

The client must still meet the eligibility criteria for Accommodation Security Cover Grant to be granted a subsequent Accommodation Security Cover Grant.

Note an accommodation supplier cannot claim for any outstanding accommodation costs and expenses if they are requesting a subsequent grant. This is because the accommodation agreement has not ended.

Example - subsequent grant

Kanav is conditionally granted an Accommodation Security Cover Grant to enter an accommodation agreement as a flatmate. The Accommodation Security Cover Grant period is for 12 months.

He stays in the accommodation for 12 months, and then requests that his accommodation supplier let him continue to stay in the accommodation.

His accommodation supplier is a head tenant in the property and they are worried about the risk of being responsible for any damages Kanav might cause to the property. They agree to let him stay as a flatmate but only if he continues to have an active Accommodation Security Cover Grant.

MSD makes a subsequent Accommodation Security Cover Grant for a 12-month period so that Kanav can keep his accommodation.
