in-work tax credit : Contents

Introduction

The in-work tax credit is paid by Inland Revenue to low-income working families with dependent children.

There are no minimum hours of work required to get this payment (from 1 July 2020).

Working families can get up to $97.50 a week for the first 3 children (total) and up to $15.00 extra per week for each additional child.

In-work tax credit is chargeable income for Temporary Additional Support.

Note the in-work tax credit was known as the in-work payment before 1 April 2007.

Care and protection concerns

If MSD believes any child has been, or is likely to be harmed (physically, emotionally or sexually), ill-treated, abused, neglected, deprived or MSD has concerns about the wellbeing of the child, the case must be referred to Oranga Tamariki.

Oranga Tamariki-Ministry for Children is known as "Oranga Tamariki". It came into existence on 1 April 2017, and replaced what was known as "Child, Youth and Family" or CYF.

Its original name, from 1 April 2017 until 18 January 2018, was the "Ministry for Vulnerable Children, Oranga Tamariki".
