Recoverable Assistance Payment : Contents

Car repairs

If a client meets all qualifications, a Recoverable Assistance Payment may be made for repairs to a vehicle, when the use of a car is essential for the client or their dependent partner and children. The car should be considered essential due to illness, disability, employment, or lack of access to public transport.

The car should be owned by the client or their partner, not another family member or a friend.

Assistance should not be given to approve foreseen costs (for example, fuel, warrant of fitness, car insurance, and car registration) or for regular servicing costs.

Car insurance excess

Car insurance excess is the cost a person has to pay towards their insurance claim, with the insurance company meeting the remaining cost.

If the client meets all qualifications, a Recoverable Assistance Payment may be made for the cost of car insurance excess.

Payment

Except where exceptional circumstances exist, payment cannot exceed:

  • 6 weeks of the appropriate rate of Supported Living Payment that the client would be entitled to receive or
  • $400

whichever is the least amount.
