Recoverable Assistance Payment : Contents

Work and Income debt balance

The maximum Recoverable Assistance Payments available are reduced by the client's Work and Income debt balance unless exceptional circumstances exist.

If a client (and their partner, if any) has Work and Income debt equal to, or greater than their maximum Recoverable Assistance Payments limit, they would not generally qualify for payment unless exceptional circumstances exist.

Assess the existing debt balance by combining Work and Income debt totals for both the client and partner (if any). Reduce the client's Recoverable Assistance Payment limit by their existing Work and Income debt level.

Consider the client's current income/expenses and ability to live within the reduced income and the likelihood they may need further assistance if the payment is approved.

When determining entitlement to a Recoverable Assistance Payment, include the following Work and Income debt(s): Special Needs Grants, Recoverable Assistance Payments, Housing Support Products, Liable Parent Contribution, Major Repairs Advance and Benefit overpayments.

For example:

Recoverable Assistance Payment maximum payment limit

$1300.00

Less outstanding Recoverable Assistance Payment debt balance

$800.00

Recoverable Assistance Payment balance

$500.00

Less other Work and Income debts

$700.00

Total debts less Recoverable Assistance Payment maximum limit

-$200.00

Although the client has a $500.00 Recoverable Assistance balance, total Work and Income debts are greater than the maximum Recoverable Assistance payable.
