Payment for children's care

Where the children live with the client in the care facility, the client is paid Personal Allowance, family tax credit and Best Start tax credit if qualified. The service provider receives the remainder of the benefit.

If the care is likely to continue for more than 6 months the entitlement to Sole Parent Support would stop. The caregiver may qualify for assistance for the children such as Emergency Benefit, Unsupported Childs Benefit or Working for Families Tax Credits through Inland Revenue.

If the children are cared for by another caregiver in the community, the client is responsible for paying the family tax credit and Best Start tax credit to the temporary caregiver. If the family tax credit and Best Start tax credit does not cover the additional child care costs, then Community Costs may be considered.

If the client is receiving Special Benefit, then this should be reviewed as Community Costs.
