Dryer

Allowable costs for Temporary Additional Support can include regular repayments for a clothes dryer, where it is needed because of a client's disability.

The maximum weekly limit for a dryer per family is $31.80 (as at 1 April 2026).

Dryer purchased before the client became a beneficiary

Temporary Additional Support can be paid when the dryer was purchased before the client became a beneficiary.

Note this includes clients who at the time of their application for Temporary Additional Support, are or have been a beneficiary at some point since purchasing the essential item.

Dryer purchased when the client was a beneficiary

If the dryer was purchased when the client or their partner (if any) was a beneficiary Temporary Additional Support can only be paid if the cost:

  • is essential to meet the family's daily living needs and
  • could not be easily avoided or reduced when the expense was incurred (e.g. there were no other options available at the time of purchase)

Verification

A registered medical practitioner or nurse practitioner must complete a Disability Allowance medical certificate confirming the client's disability, need for treatment and that a dryer is necessary. The certificate must also confirm the treatment is beneficial and of therapeutic value and that the costs are:

  • additional and
  • ongoing and
  • directly related to the client's disability
