Orphans or Unsupported Childs Benefit is paid
When a client is getting an Orphans and/or an Unsupported Childs Benefit and applies for Temporary Additional Support:
- the child is not treated as a dependent child for the purpose of Temporary Additional Support and
- the Orphans Benefit and Unsupported Childs Benefit is not chargeable income in the assessment of Temporary Additional Support
However, a client who is getting an Orphans Benefit or Unsupported Childs Benefit can have an essential expense for the child included as an allowable cost for Temporary Additional Support provided the expense cannot be met by the Orphans Benefit or Unsupported Childs Benefit or a Disability Allowance.
Disability Allowance for orphan or unsupported child
When assessing the rate of Temporary Additional Support where the client is getting a Disability Allowance on behalf of an orphan or unsupported child you must include:
- the amount of Disability Allowance being paid for the child as chargeable income and
- the total amount of Disability Allowance costs for the child as allowable costs
If the child's Disability Allowance costs exceed the maximum amount of Disability Allowance paid, the client may qualify for the disability exception amount.
Standard costs
When a client is paid a main benefit and also gets paid an Orphans Benefit or Unsupported Childs Benefit, you would use the standard cost that relates to the main benefit only.
