Vehicle running costs - for employment
Allowable motor vehicle running costs for employment can be included in the assessment of Temporary Additional Support.
In addition, these costs must be essential to meet the client's daily living needs and could not be readily avoided or varied when the expense was incurred.
Motor vehicle running costs can be included in the assessment of Temporary Additional Support where:
- there is no suitable public transport available and
- the client or their partner needs the vehicle to travel to and from their place of paid employment
The following rates have been set and reflect the reasonable 'running costs' (excluding fixed costs) of a vehicle dependent on engine size.
Running costs include consumables such, as petrol and oil. Fixed costs (not included in the calculation) include costs such as, relicensing, insurance and Warrants of Fitness.
Fixed costs are not included as all clients will incur these costs when they own a vehicle.
The rates recognise the reasonable 'running costs' of a vehicle as opposed to 'fixed costs' and are consistent with the intent of the legislation, where it is stated that, 'running costs' are at a per kilometre rate as set by MSD, where no suitable public transport is available.
Use these rates to calculate the allowable motor vehicle running costs:
cc rating | payable per kilometre |
up to 1000 | 29 cents |
1001 to 1350 | 30 cents |
1351 to 2000 | 35 cents |
over 2000 | 40 cents |
Verification
The client must provide verification of their vehicle running costs, which must include the cc rating of their vehicle and the distance travelled to and from their employment.
SWIFTT process
If the client or any family members have allowable costs for Temporary Additional Support, you will need to manually add them into the STAWA screen.
