Time limits on grant of Emergency Benefit

Emergency Benefits can continue for a period that is determined at grant of benefit. Generally Emergency Maintenance Allowance clients are granted for a one year period.

When deciding the length of grant you should take into consideration:

• when the client will qualify for a statutory benefit
• any additional conditions of grant and
• any perceived changes in circumstances

The length of grant should be advised to the client at grant. When the period has expired, you should review the client's eligibility to an Emergency Benefit.
