Effect on benefit

Any inclusion or exclusion of a dependent child from a client's benefit will result in a general review of the client's Jobseeker Support and any extra help they are getting.

You may need to review the following:

  • the rate of Jobseeker Support, you will need to review the rate payable if the child being excluded is the client's last or only dependent child
  • Jobseeker Support obligations

Partner's work obligations may change. Where a partner has a change in work obligations as a result of the change in circumstances, this will need to be reviewed.

When a single client has a child come into their care they may no longer be able to meet their work obligations. Depending on the age of the child, they may be able to get Sole Parent Support or an Emergency Benefit Single and caring for a child.

  • Jobseeker Support Parental Assistance Test

When the last child of a young person aged 16 to 19 leaves their care or stops being dependent, they must meet the Parental Assistance Test to keep getting Jobseeker Support. This includes a child the client or their partner got Foster Care Allowance, Orphans Benefit or Unsupported Childs Benefit for.

  • Accommodation Supplement

Changes to the family composition may result in a change to the Accommodation Supplement entry thresholds.

  • Non-standard benefit rate

Where a child is added or removed you may need to manually adjust the non-standard rate of payment.

  • Special Benefit

Any change to family circumstances will result in a review of Special Benefit. A child included or excluded from the Jobseeker Support may result in a change to the allowable costs for Special Benefit.

  • Temporary Additional Support

Any change to family circumstances will result in a review of Temporary Additional Support. A child included or excluded from the Jobseeker Support may result in a change to the allowable costs for Temporary Additional Support.
