Examples of paying for more than 28 days for obtaining family support for young partners

Generally, a benefit cannot be paid for more than 28 days in any 52 week period while a client is absent from New Zealand. However there are limited circumstances where a benefit can be paid for more than 28 days in a 52 week period where the client is travelling to receive support from a family member (including any other person who is treated by the client as a member of the client's family) who is residing overseas.

Young partner of a main beneficiary generally won't meet requirements of obtaining support

A partner of a main beneficiary who has youth activity obligations would generally not meet the requirements to be paid a benefit in this circumstance because usually they would be receiving the support of their spouse or partner. If they are receiving the support of their spouse or partner it could not be justified for them to travel overseas to receive the support of a different family member.

Young partner of main beneficiary may meet the requirements in some circumstances

However, they may be able to be paid their payment for more than 28 days for the purposes of obtaining support from a family member if:

  • the support they require can't be given by their partner because the main beneficiary themselves is absent from New Zealand or
  • it is support the young partner cannot receive from their partner (for example, it is support from a parent or grandparent or the partner and the young person are having relationship difficulties)
