Exception for young partners

There are two ways that young partners aged 16 or 17 years (with no children) and 16 to 19 years (with dependent children) can have their portion of their benefit paid to them, depending on whether the young partner is subject to youth money management or not.

Young partner is not subject to youth money management

When a young partner is not subject to youth money management they can get their portion of their main benefit payment, family tax credit, Best Start tax credit and any extra help paid directly to their bank account.

Young partner is subject to youth money management

If a young partner is subject to youth money management the young partner's portion of main benefit, family tax credit, Best Start tax credit and any extra help (except Disability Allowance and Child Disability Allowance) is paid via:

  • payment directly to supplier (e.g. a payee redirection for accommodation costs, utility costs and lawful debts)
  • in-hand allowance which is paid directly to the young person's bank account
  • payment card - the young person is able to purchase goods (such as food and groceries) from approved suppliers

Note Disability Allowance and Child Disability Allowance is paid directly to the young person's bank account.

For more information see:

It is a condition of getting a benefit that the client provides a bank account number.

MSD may request the client or their partner to provide an IRD number or evidence of their IRD number.
