When grandparenting ends
Couples getting the New Zealand Superannuation grandparented non-qualified partner rate on or after 9 November 2020 will no longer qualify for the grandparented rate in any of the following situations:
- the non-qualified partner starts getting New Zealand Superannuation or Veteran's Pension in their own right
- the qualified partner chooses not to continue getting the grandparented non-qualified partner rate
- the qualified partner, with or without the non-qualified partner, is absent from New Zealand and no longer qualifies for New Zealand Superannuation on or after 9 November 2020
- the qualified partner is in custody, in prison or on remand on or after 9 November 2020 and does not qualify for ongoing payments of New Zealand Superannuation for the period of imprisonment
Once the grandparented non-qualified partner rate ends, the qualifying partner cannot include a non-qualifying partner again.
Note a client getting the New Zealand Superannuation grandparented non-qualified partner rate can transfer to Veteran's Pension if they qualify and include their grandparented non-qualified partner in their Veteran's Pension payments.
Client does not respond to Mandatory Review and New Zealand Superannuation is cancelled
If a couple's New Zealand Superannuation (with grandparented non-qualified partner included) is cancelled because the client did not respond to the Mandatory Review, the non-qualified partner can be re-included as a grandparented non-qualified partner if the qualifying partner reapplies for New Zealand Superannuation.
