Orphans Benefit and Unsupported Childs Benefit : Contents
Commencement Date
Payment of the Orphans Benefit and Unsupported Childs Benefit begins from either:
- the day the child comes into the care of the caregiver
- the date the child has been discharged from the care of the Chief Executive of Oranga Tamariki or
- the date of application
whichever is the later.
From 1 July 2018 all caregivers receiving Orphans Benefit or Unsupported Childs Benefit will automatically be granted a weekly non-taxable Clothing Allowance for Orphans or Unsupported children.

When a new application for Orphans Benefit or Unsupported Childs Benefit is granted, review any benefits (including Extra help) received by the parents or previous caregiver and exclude the child.
Also review any benefits being made on behalf of the child, such as Child Disability Allowance and Disability Allowance.
