In approved full-time training
This exemption may apply to clients on Sole Parent Support with work obligations.
A client can be partially exempt from meeting some of their work obligations if they are engaged in approved full-time training.
Consider whether the training course is the most suitable activity for the client. Also consider if other activities (for example programmes, seminars or work experience) might be a more appropriate option for moving the client towards paid work.
Discuss and take into account the client's career background, including:
- their educational qualifications
- their employment history
- their skills and
- whether training will help them find work at the earliest opportunity
Examples of approved training courses include but are not limited to:
- Limited Service Volunteer (LSV) [no link find out why]
- Skills for Industry [no link find out why]
- Targeted Training [no link find out why]
- training approved by the regional contracts manager
The approved training must:
- be full time (at least 20 hours a week)
- focus on teaching practical, employment-related skills
- support the client to gain the skills that will help them find work
Approved training does not include a course undertaken by a full-time student, as defined by the Student Allowance Regulations 1998.
Proof
Generally if a client has been referred to the training, they will not need to provide proof. However, if there is any doubt, you can ask the client to provide a training statement signed by the course provider.
Duration
This exemption can be granted for up to 12 months, or until the end of the training course, whichever is first.
