In approved study before subject to work obligations
A Sole Parent Support client can be exempt from meeting some or all of their work obligations if they were in MSD approved study when their work obligations started, and they are still in that study.
This happens when a client was partway through a course of study when:
- they became subject to work obligations or
- their youngest dependent child turned 3 years old
When an exemption is approved, MSD may set conditions for the exemption. For example, the client must be passing their course of study.
Proof
The client must provide proof they are in study, such as enrolment forms or a training statement from their training provider.
Duration
When an exemption is approved, MSD sets a duration for the exemption.
Generally an exemption can be in place until the earlier of:
- the end of the client's current course of study or
- the end of the current academic year or
- up to 12 months
Continuing study
If the client is continuing their study the following year, they must get a new exemption approved.
They must also provide confirmation they passed at least 50% of their course the previous year.
