Carers receiving other income
Supported Living Payment is paid to support a client while they are providing care. It is not paid to provide a wage.
Where someone is recruited to 'work' for the person getting care, the Employment Relations Act 2000 and various other legislative measures which regulate employment apply (eg the Minimum Wage Act 1983 and the Holidays Act 2003).
A person who needs care may receive funding from another agency such as Accident Compensation Corporation to pay a carer directly. In these cases, the person may employ the client receiving Supported Living Payment to provide care.
While a client who is receiving payment for providing care is not excluded from getting Supported Living Payment any payment they get for providing care is treated as income.
