Kāinga Ora debt historical Income Related Rent debt

Kāinga Ora is responsible for recovering any Income Related Rent debt established before 14 April 2014.

Kāinga Ora can issue a deduction notice to MSD to recover Income Related Rent debt owed to them by clients who are getting a benefit.

Historical Kāinga Ora  Income Related Rent debt has the same repayment priority as Income Related Rent debt repayments to MSD.

This is as MSD Income Related Rent debt and historical Kāinga Ora Income Related Rent debt are both Crown debts and must be given equal priority for recovery.

For example, if a client has a historical Income Related Rent debt with Kāinga Ora and now has an Income Related Rent debt with MSD, the client will contribute equal repayment amounts to both debts as they are both Crown debts.
