Ending Income Related Rent or Income Related Rent Subsidy
MSD must have confirmation from the housing provider that a tenancy has ended before they can stop paying the Income Related Rent Subsidy or calculating the rate of Income Related Rent.
The tenancy will end at the:
- end of the notice period given by either the tenant or the housing provider or
- date specified in a termination order, if any, from the Tenancy Tribunal
Generally, the tenancy end date should align with the last rent charge date, however in some cases the last rent payment may be for a partial period.
The tenant is responsible for rent payments until the end of the notice period.
Notice period to vacate a property
The notice to vacate a property begins when either the housing provider or the tenant receives written notice to vacate.
If a housing provider gives notice to vacate a property, the notice period is usually 90 days. However, shorter notice periods are possible in some cases.
When a tenant wishes to vacate a property, the notice period is usually 28 days.
However, shorter notice periods are possible in some cases, for example, a 2-day notice period can be given when the property is deemed uninhabitable, unless the Tenancy Agreement was breached.
A housing provider may also accept a shorter notice period when written notice is provided following verbal notice.
