Example of reviewing the rate of Income Related Rent from an earlier date
Example 1
Jane has been receiving Sole Parent Support since July 2021 and has been a social housing tenant since 2020.
In January 2023 MSD became aware that Jane was in a relationship. Her partner was living with her and earning income above the threshold for benefits and additional assistance. The benefit was stopped and, after investigation, it was determined that she had misled MSD about her relationship status since the benefit was granted and the relationship began in July 2022.
A debt is established for the benefit paid from July 2022 until January 2023 and is to be recovered by MSD
When completing the review of Income Related Rent for the period over which the benefit debt was established (July 2022 to January 2023), the household type must be updated to include Jane's partner who was living with her. Only the income earned by Jane's partner will be included as income for the period. The benefit paid to Jane, which she was not entitled to and will be recovered, is not included as income.
The Income Related Rent reviewed for the period will reflect what it would have been had she advised MSD of the change in her circumstances when it had occurred.
