Grandparenting ends - Accommodation Benefit standard rates
The higher standard rate of Accommodation Benefit will be grandparented for any eligible student until one of the following occurs:
- the student's application on which they are getting the grandparented rate ends or
- the student has a change in circumstances and they are no longer eligible for the standard rate of Accommodation Benefit, this is when the student:
- starts living in the same home as a parent or
- moves into a home maintained by, or provided by a parents or
- moves into social housing
- the student has a change in course which results in a new application or
- the student becomes eligible for a higher rate than the grandparented Accommodation Benefit rate while under the same application, due to a change in the student's:
- address (extramural study only) or
- campus location (intramural study only) or
- the student has a child enter their care and they qualify for the Sole Parent Accommodation Benefit rate under the same application
Current study application period ends
Grandparenting of the standard rate of Accommodation Benefit can only be paid to students on their current study application.
When the current study application period ends, so will the grandparenting.
Change in circumstances that end grandparenting eligibility
The grandparented standard rate of Accommodation Benefit will end if the student:
- moves back into their parental home or
- moves to a home maintained by, or provided by their parents or
- moves into social housing
Change in course resulting in a new application
Grandparented standard rates of Accommodation Benefit only apply for the current study application a student is enrolled in. Where a student decides to change their course, a new application will be started and grandparenting will end when the original application ends.
Student is eligible for a higher rate than the grandparented rate
If a student is on a grandparented standard rate of Accommodation Benefit and has a change in circumstances making them eligible for a higher rate of Accommodation Benefit than the grandparented rate, grandparenting will end.
Dependent child enters the student's care
Students who are getting a standard rate of Accommodation Benefit and have a dependent child enter their care, will be transferred to the sole parent rate of Accommodation Benefit.
Once this happens, any grandparented standard rate of Accommodation Benefit will stop.
Note sole parents who do not qualify for a sole parent rate of Accommodation Benefit are not eligible for the standard rate of Accommodation Benefit.
