Resuming grandparenting in the same study application period

If a grandparented standard rate of Accommodation Benefit has been stopped, the grandparented rate may be resumed if it is within the same study application, and the student:

  • has a dependent child enter and then leave their care or
  • becomes eligible for a higher standard rate of Accommodation Benefit and then moves back to the Territorial Authority where they were previously getting the grandparented rate

Student has a dependent child enter and then leave their care

Students who have a dependent child enter their care, will be transferred to the Sole Parent rate of Accommodation Benefit and their grandparented rate will stop.

If the dependent child leaves the student's care within the same study application, then the grandparented standard rate of Accommodation Benefit can be resumed for the remainder of the application period.

For more information see:

Change in address for extramural students

If an extramural student gets a grandparented standard rate of Accommodation Benefit, a change of address may affect their grandparenting arrangements when they move to a Territorial Authority with a higher rate of Accommodation Benefit than the grandparented rate.

Student Allowance has stopped due to excess income

Student Allowance is an income tested payment and the rate of allowance paid can depend on any personal income a student earns (and any income of a spouse, partner or parent).

If a student's income is more than the gross threshold per week, their Student Allowance will abate by the equivalent amount of income received over this figure until their entitlement reaches nil.

When Student Allowance stops, so does the standard rate of Accommodation Benefit.

When the student's weekly income goes under the income threshold again, Student Allowance will be re-started as well as any grandparented rate of Accommodation Benefit providing it is within the same study application period.

Change in campus but same provider

An intramural student may have their grandparented rate end if they have a change in campus and are eligible for a higher rate at the new campus.

The grandparented rate can resume if the student returns to the campus in the Territorial Authority where they received the grandparented rate while they are under the current study application.

Legislation

Intramural students are students completing their studies onsite at an education provider.

The standard rate of Accommodation Benefit is based on the location of their education provider, not their residential address.

Generally students will be living and studying on or near their providers location.
