Student couple earning between $569.40 and $1,185.75 per week
When 2 people are considered a couple for Student Allowance purposes, and
- one is not a student, or is a student enrolled in half or less than half of a full-time course and
- the couple's total combined income is more than $569.40 but less than $1,185.75 gross per week (as at 1 April 2026)
the student receives the applicable rate of Student Allowance.
However, when the couple are both eligible students, and the above criteria are met, each student is entitled to the applicable rate.
In any week that the couple's total combined income is $1,185.75 or more gross per week (as at 1 April 2026), there is no entitlement to Student Allowance.
For the student, the personal income abatement reduces the gross weekly rate of Student Allowance by the equivalent amount received by the student over $284.70 gross per week (as at 1 April 2026) until entitlement is nil.
Example if a student receives $290.00 gross per week, their gross Student Allowance will reduce by $5.30 (as at 1 April 2026).
Living with their partner
A lower rate is payable if the student is living with their partner. They are not eligible for an Accommodation Benefit in this situation.
