Student allowance : Contents

The student will complete a recognised programme they previously commenced but did not complete and they are undertaking 'more than half of a full-time course'

Criteria

Where a student is enrolled in more than half of a full-time course, but not in a full-time course and they have completed part of that course previously, and they will complete a recognised programme when they complete that course, they may be eligible for Limited-full-time status.

If a student subsequently makes an application for the same course of study (after it should have been completed), MSD needs to consider the situation carefully.

To approve a further period of study for the same course, there needs to be good reason why the course was not completed as originally intended.

Situations where a student may qualify under this provision

The following are examples where a student may qualify under this provision:

Recognition of prior learning

  • a student who is studying less than full-time due to the recognition of prior learning and
  • will complete a recognised programme they have previously commenced but did not complete and
  • is studying more than half a full-time course

Part-time study

  • a student who is undertaking a programme of study that usually involves up to 1 year of study, but it takes longer than a year and
  • they are completing a recognised programme which they previously commenced but did not complete and
  • is studying more than half of a full-time course

Repeating papers due to failure

  • a student who is repeating papers due to an earlier failure and
  • who will complete a recognised programme they have previously commenced but did not complete and
  • is studying more than half of a full-time course

The requirement to maintain an acceptable level of academic performance is managed by the 'passing more than half' provision.

Changes made from 1 January 2013

For study starting on or after 1 January 2013 the Regulation covering this Limited full-time provision was clarified by including the requirement that the student must, on completing that course, be completing a recognised programme.

Changes made from 1 July 2015

For study starting on or after 1 July 2015 the Regulation covering this Limited full-time provision was clarified by including the requirement that a student must have previously completed part of the course of study they are now undertaking.

Any cases, reviews or appeals dealing with eligibility or entitlement prior to these changes will need to take into account the law and approach in place at that time.
