Introduction

The Student Loan Scheme provides financial support to New Zealanders to undertake tertiary education.

Eligible students must be enrolled in a recognised course of study or programme at an approved education provider.

Student Loans are delivered via a contract between the student and the Crown.

Student Loans must be repaid when a borrower earns over the applicable repayment threshold. Student Loan debt and repayments are administered by Inland Revenue.

Together with the Student Allowances Scheme, Student Loans are the main components of the Student Support system that provides funding directly to students. The government funds education providers through the Tertiary Education Commission.
