Move to another country
When a client getting New Zealand Superannuation or Veteran's Pension moves to another country other than New Zealand or Korea for 26 weeks or more, this can affect their entitlement to New Zealand Superannuation or Veteran's Pension.
The client may still be entitled to their New Zealand Superannuation or Veteran's Pension if:
- they are moving to a country with a reciprocal agreement with New Zealand and they qualify under that agreement or
- they are moving to the Cook Islands, Niue or Tokelau and they qualify under the Special Portability Provisions
Payment of New Zealand Superannuation or Veteran's Pension should stop from the day after the client leaves Korea. The client needs to check if they can get New Zealand Superannuation or Veteran's Pension in the country they have moved to.
Residence
New Zealand Superannuation or Veteran's Pension cannot usually be paid to a client who leaves Korea to live in a country that does not have an agreement with New Zealand. This is because the client would need to be ordinarily resident and present in New Zealand when they apply for payment overseas under either the General or Special Portability provisions. However, they may be able to be paid if they move to the Cook Islands, Niue or Tokelau where more flexible special portability provisions apply.
If the client is getting New Zealand Superannuation or Veteran's Pension by using their periods of contributions in Korea to meet the New Zealand residence qualification, they may not be entitled to have the New Zealand Superannuation or Veteran's Pension paid in another agreement country. Their entitlement will depend on the terms of the agreement between New Zealand and the new country the client has moved to.
