Young people not yet subject to obligation to be in education, training or work-based learning

A young person who is not yet subject to the obligation to be in education, training or work based learning can continue to be paid a benefit while they are absent from New Zealand for any reason if the:

  • travel will not prevent them from continuing to meet their youth activity obligations (eg because they are attending school and the travel is during the school holidays or they are attending a training course and the travel is during a term or semester break, and they do not need to be in New Zealand to meet any of their other obligations during the travel period)

Outcome

A young person who is not yet subject to the education obligation as their youngest dependent child is less than 12 months (and there is no Teen Parent Unit place available for them) wishes to holiday in Australia.

As long as the travel will not prevent the young person from meeting their other obligations (eg their budgeting obligations) it will be approved. The young person can continue to receive their benefit while they are overseas for up to 28 days in any 52 week period.
