Financial support from a sponsor

Where the client was granted permanent residence because a sponsor was to support them for their first 2 to 5 years in New Zealand (supplied in writing), you must contact the sponsor to confirm the situation.

Note if the client has resided in New Zealand for 2 years no contact with the sponsor is required and assess the client's entitlement to Young Parent Payment in the usual manner.

You will also need to obtain information from the Immigration New Zealand to confirm the reason for granting permanent residence. Ensure you have the consent of the client before contacting Immigration New Zealand.

Once confirmed, assess Young Parent Payment in the usual manner taking into account all other information provided by Immigration New Zealand.

Generally, where the client elects not to accept support from the sponsor without a valid reason decline the application for Young Parent Payment or grant the Young Parent Payment at a reduced rate.

Family sponsorship before February 1997

Where a client applied for permanent residence under family sponsorship (other than family of refugees) before February 1997, their sponsor only agreed to ensure adequate accommodation for up to 12 months from the immigrant's arrival in New Zealand. The sponsor was not usually expected to provide any other financial support.
