In the care of Oranga Tamariki

The Chief Executive of Oranga Tamariki is responsible for meeting the medical costs of the children placed in their care.

Children in the care of Oranga Tamariki must pay full costs for services that are covered by a Community Services Card.

An individual child in care may qualify for a High Use Health Card under the same criteria as any other person.

For more information see:

Carers have the following choices when paying for health services on behalf of the child:

  • have the service provider send the account to the Chief Executive of Oranga Tamariki
  • meet the expenses and send the relevant receipts to their social worker who arranges for the expenses to be refunded
  • if the child has a personal High Use Health Card then the caregiver should use this to obtain the lower health charges. No refund would be claimable through Oranga Tamariki as the child's care allowance is intended to cover these minor expenses. However, if prescription co-payments (for fully subsidised, partially subsidised or non-subsidised prescription items) are incurred, then Oranga Tamariki will consider reimbursement when they determine it is appropriate
  • the only time MSD is involved in reimbursement for High Use Health Card holders is when:
    • charges were incurred before the client got their card or
    • when a full charge was made because the carer did not have the entitlement card
