Client representatives

A client may ask that a client representative be appointed as a client's agent. This may be an individual person such as a benefit advocate. They do not have to be part of an organisation.

Process

The client's informed consent is required before we can deal with a client representative as an agent. You need to ensure that the client approves of the agent, and is aware of what rights and responsibilities they are agreeing to give the client representative as their agent.

Whenever a client representative acting as the client's agent makes contact with Work and Income, Senior Services or Housing Assessment you must always:

  • request identification to confirm the representative's identity
  • confirm the client representatives authority to act on the clients behalf and
  • ensure they exercise only the rights and responsibilities granted by the client (establish this by checking the agent latch in the client's CMS record)
