Examples of where agency may be relevant

The following are some common situations where it may be relevant for the client to consider appointing an agent.

Specific issues

A client may wish to appoint an agent to deal with a specific issue, for example to act on their behalf in relation to a Review of Decision.

In such cases, the agent's rights and responsibilities will normally be limited to only those required to deal with the issue.

Clients with language or mobility issues

Clients with difficulties communicating, or clients who have physical difficulty visiting Ministry of Social Development offices may find it beneficial to appoint an agent to act on their behalf.

Clients who are ill

The appointment of an agent may be appropriate in situations where a client is ill.

If the client is receiving financial assistance they may also wish to redirect their benefit payment to the agent (as long as there is good cause to do so).

Clients in homes or institutions

If a client is being maintained as a resident of a home or institution, the client may wish for the home or institution to be appointed as their agent.

Clients served with trespass notices

Clients who have had trespass notices served, prohibiting them from entering specific Ministry of Social Development sites, are advised by letter to appoint an agent to act as their representative.
