Process when partner fails job interview or job offer requirements

Where a partner fails to comply with the pre-benefit requirement of attending and participating in an interview for suitable employment or accepting an offer of suitable employment, it should be determined whether they had a good and sufficient reason.

If the partner does not have a good and sufficient reason then the action taken depends on the status of their application for benefit.

Failure is prior to the benefit being granted

  • lapse the partner's portion of the benefit from the date MSD made the decision that the partner has failed

Benefit has been granted

  • suspend the partner's portion of the benefit from the commencement date (if the benefit has already commenced this may establish a debt)

Partner still requires financial assistance

In all cases, if the partner still requires financial assistance they will have to re-establish their eligibility for benefit. The date the partner makes contact to do this, will become their new date of first contact.

For more information see:

The date a client first contacts us to request financial assistance is their date of first contact. A client may contact the Ministry of Social Development at any time, through various methods e.g. at reception in a service centre, via telephone through one of the contact centres, or in writing.

Clients may also apply for financial assistance online.
