Client in long term care
If a client is in long term care and they get a Residential Care Subsidy, they are not eligible for Accommodation Supplement.
Client does not qualify for Residential Care Subsidy
If a client is in long term care and they do not qualify for Residential Care Subsidy, they may be able to get Accommodation Supplement. Their accommodation costs must be verified by their residential care provider.
Client has a partner
If a client enters long term care and their partner stays in the community, they may be able to get Accommodation Supplement individually. To assess Accommodation Supplement in these situations, MSD must:
- halve the couple's gross income and assets for the assessment
- use the appropriate single entry threshold and maximum rate
- use the cost of residence as a board cost for the partner in care (if they qualify)
Note any income of the partner in the community that was included in the means assessment of the partner in care must not be included as chargeable income for Accommodation Supplement.
