School stationery

When all the qualifications are met, an Advance Payment of Benefit to assist with the cost of essential school or training stationery/materials can be made to:

  • client's for their dependent children
  • a young person receiving Youth Payment or Young Parent Payment or
  • the partner of a specified beneficiary who has youth activity obligations and attending secondary school

As a guideline, an Advance Payment of Benefit for school or training stationery/materials should not be more than $200 for each dependent child, young person or partner.

Clients receiving Orphans Benefit or Unsupported Childs Benefit

Check if a client has applied for a School and Year Start-up Payment if a client receiving Orphans Benefit or Unsupported Childs Benefit applies for an Advance for school costs between the first Monday after the 10th January and the last day of February. If the client has not applied for a School and Year Start-up Payment, assist the client to make an application for the School and Year Start-up Payment.

When a client has received a School and Year Start-up Payment for a child, discuss with the client if the need for assistance with school stationery has been met. If the need for school stationery has not been met, consider the advance using the usual process.

Note generally no receipts are required to show how the School and Year Start-up Payment was used.
