School uniforms

When all the qualifications are met, an Advance Payment of Benefit to purchase school uniforms can be made to:

  • clients for their dependent children
  • a young person receiving Youth Payment or Young Parent Payment or
  • the partner of a specified beneficiary who is subject to youth activity obligations and attending secondary school

As a guideline, an Advance Payment of Benefit for school uniforms should not be more than $300 for each dependent child, young person or partner.

Clients receiving Orphans Benefit or Unsupported Childs Benefit

Check if a client has applied for a School and Year Start-up Payment. Clients getting Orphans Benefit or Unsupported Childs Benefit can apply for a School and Year Start-Up Payment for a school uniform between the first Monday after the 10th January and the last day of February. If the client has not applied for a School and Year Start-up Payment, assist the client to make an application for the School and Year Start-up Payment.

When a client has received a School and Year Start-up Payment for a child, discuss with the client if the need for assistance with a school uniform has been met. If the need for a school uniform has not been met, consider the advance using the usual process.

Note generally no receipts are required to show how the School and Year Start-up Payment was used.

A sole parent receiving Young Parent Payment may be able to receive Education and employment-related training to meet their additional training costs. See:
