Child Disability Allowance : Contents

Introduction

Child Disability Allowance is a non-taxable allowance that is available to the principal caregiver of a dependent child who has a serious disability.

It is paid because of the extra care that may be needed by a child who has a physical, sensory, psychiatric or intellectual disability.

The client may also be able to receive a Disability Allowance to meet any additional costs the child has because of their disability.

There is no income and asset test for Child Disability Allowance.

Once a child turns 16 years of age they may be able to get Supported Living Payment on the ground of having a health condition, injury or disability.

Legislation

A person with an intellectual disability has intellectual functioning significantly below average. They may also have limitations with their behaviour (either behavioural problems or difficulty with managing day to day tasks or both).

An intellectual disability is not an illness or a disease and there may be various causes, for example; genetic, chromosomal abnormality or injury. One example of intellectual disability is Down Syndrome.
