Proof of transport costs

The costs of travelling to receive treatment, support services or counselling, or to visit their registered health practitioner may be considered as additional expenses arising from the client's disability.

The client must provide:

  • a Disability Allowance medical certificate completed and signed by a registered medical practitioner or nurse practitioner verifying that the travel is an additional and ongoing expense arising from the client's disability and
  • proof of their ongoing travel costs

Travel not specifically stated on the Medical Certificate

Where 'travel' is not specifically written on the Disability Allowance disability certificate it can be included as an allowable cost without further verification if the medical practitioner or nurse practitioner has verified the:

  • client will be attending a specific treatment, counselling or support service as a result of their disability and
  • frequency of the treatments, counselling or support service

Public transport and taxis

If the client is using public transport or taxis, they must provide receipts as proof of their costs.

When a client has a Total Mobility card or vouchers, the cost of their travel fares is subsidised.

Clients with a Community Services Card can get a 50% discount on public transport fares through Community Connect.

Private vehicle

If the client is using their own car, the rates listed in the table below are used to calculate the costs.

The following rates have been set and reflect the reasonable running costs (excluding fixed costs) of a vehicle dependent on engine size.

Running costs include consumables such, as petrol and oil. Fixed costs (not included in the calculation) include costs such as, relicensing, insurance and Warrants of Fitness.

Fixed costs are not included as all clients will incur these costs when they own a vehicle. For example, people without a disability would still incur fixed costs.

Use these rates to calculate the allowable vehicle running costs.
